Microsoft FSX is still selling at most software outlets, even Walmart so to say Microsoft has nothing to do with FSX is incorrect They are no longer developing it or improving it but they are still selling it. So the activation site has to remain open. FS2004 needed a cd to run but FSX doesn't but it does require activation. I applaud Dovetail for taking it on but they must make improvements.

At present the Boxed version is much more stable. FSX_SE crashes or loses scenery because of Dll conflicts. That has to be addressed. As far as FPS and smoothness is concerned, FSX Gold Edition with the acceleration pack installed does just as well as the SE version.
